Hiding in Plain Sight

He turns inward the dog tag his mother brought him from London’s Soho
to hide the six colors imprinted on one side;
She smiles at his creative solution.

His mom comments that she is happy he likes
the souvenir so much.
He has not taken it off since receiving it.
He shrugs, and tucks the tag inside his t-shirt.
but does not remove it.
She smiles yet again.

The journey for him will be easier,
not without peril, but less dangerous.
He will meet resistance, but
not to the degree of the generation before him,
and the generation before that.
She smiles proudly at her son.

He is a sweet and gentle soul
with a wicked sense of humor
and many friends
finding his own way,
marching to his very own tune,
These are often Broadway show tunes,
beautiful music that emanates
from his every pore.
He sings in the car, the shower, and
also the bathroom.
She smiles that the music in him doesn’t stop
even when nature calls.

He is filled with:
red ~ life, he has not stopped moving since birth
orange ~ healing, he has restored her faith in men
yellow ~ sunlight, he shines with a light from within
green ~ nature, he knows the names of the plants his mother loves
turquoise ~ art, he creates magic in his performances both onstage and off
violet ~ spirit, he is the most compassionate young man she knows

This mother smiles proudly at her son;
at his comfort in his own skin,
at his decision to take his time in speaking
at his choice to let a small hint go with him
as he spends time with his beloved family.

He is his own person
and this pleases his mother most of all.
