For Amy, on her Birthday

It's throwback Thursday apparently.  This one was written for Amy several years back.
I miss you dear friend. Your memory will be kept alive and live on in our children.

A lifetime of love.

Loving you from the first day we met,
I knew you as one knows family;
familiar,
comfortable,
easy,
safe enough to remain.

We grew from there
older,
wiser,
stronger,
saner.
We grew in the knowing of
our vulnerabilities, our foibles and flaws,
until the time came when we knew almost too much and
parted in order to continue
growing.

We grieved and gloried our life together,
acknowledging our demons, sometimes too closely for comfort.
We battled, cruelly slashing at the vulnerabilities we
knew in the other.

Until peace settled in again…
the calm waters of our comfort
sometimes rippling with echoes of past pain,
betrayal, grief or misunderstandings
but calm,
familiar,
comfortable,
easy,
safe enough to remain.

I love you, Amy.  You are my family.
